Wayland High School – Field House Infield Upgrade

Frequently asked questions:

1. Q. Who is paying for this project?
A. This project is being fully funded through private donations. No public tax-payer funds will be used.

2. Q. Will this project change the amount of funding the Town of Wayland will receive from the Massachusetts State Building Authority (MSBA) for any future WHS construction project?
A. This project should not reduce state funding for any future publicly funded project. It may increase state funding since it is funded through donations according to current MSBA regulations.

3. Q. What are the benefits of this project?
A. Both Physical Education and after-school sports will have two safe practice courts plus more flexible spaces for large scale athletics. Asphalt flooring will be replaced with rubber flooring that has a shock absorption of more than 53%. Town Meeting or other large-scale concerts or lectures will now have a single space that can hold over 1,800 people who will all be able to see the same performances or speakers without separate screens or sound systems as are used at the current Town Meeting. Community programs for summer, weekend and evening uses will also have better, safer facilities for a greater variety of activities due to the flexibility of the space.

4. Q. What happens to the project construction if enough money cannot be raised to cover the entire cost?
A. The organizers of this project have already received pledges of funding for a portion of the construction cost. Once enough funding is committed the remainder of the funds will be guaranteed while additional fundraising activity occurs.

5. Q. Will this project cost the town more over time to maintain new equipment?
A. The existing wood floor requires regular refinishing and repair and requires custodial time to cover with tarps each time the space is used for activities with chairs and tables on the wood floor. The existing operable bleachers take a number of hours by custodians to open or close every time they are changed. The new bleachers will only require the push of a button with no custodial time to move. These enhancements will reduce maintenance costs for years to come. In addition, the new floor will not require replacement for decades while the old wood floor would require replacement eventually even if this project was not undertaken.

6. Q. Who do I give money to if I want to support this project?
A. Checks may be made out to Wayland PTO, 4 Winthrop Place, Wayland, Ma. 01778

7. Q. Are donations tax deductible?
A. Yes, but please check with your tax accountant for your particular situation.

8. Q. How long will the infield of the field house be closed due to this construction process?
A. Construction is expected to begin in the field house in late June and be complete in November. Other areas of the field house such as the weight room, wrestling room, lockers rooms, and bathrooms will be open as needed in September and October while construction is still occurring.

9. Q. What will happen to the sports teams or summer camp uses that use the field house each year during the time when it is projected that it will be closed?
A. Summer camp programs and the fall volleyball programs will be able to use the Middle School or elementary school gyms in town.

10. Q. Who will complete the construction?
A. The project is privately funded so may be privately bid and does not need to use the public bidding process or the lowest bidder. Several high-quality private contractors with appropriate project experience will be invited to bid the project.
