Wayland Master Plan
Advisory Study Committee Volunteers Wanted.
The Wayland Planning Board is looking for residents
interested in serving on the newly created Wayland
Master Plan Advisory Study Committee. The Planning Board
will be appointing three members to the eleven-member
Master Plan Advisory Study Committee, with additional
representation coming from other Town Boards and
Committees. The Committee, which was created at the 2008
Special Fall Town Meeting, was charged with reviewing
the 2004 Master Plan, assessing the implementation
status of the Plan’s goals and recommendations, and
making recommendations to the Planning Board for
amendments to the Plan to reflect recent developments
and changing to land use trends. The Wayland Master Plan
Advisory Study Committee will serve under the guidance
of the Planning Board and will serve for up to 18
months. Interested residents who wish to serve as
Planning Board appointees are encouraged to submit a
letter of interest to the Wayland Planning Board by
January 16, 2009. For more information, please contact
the Planning Board Office at 508-358-3615 or by email at
jlaydon@wayland.ma.us.
12/13/08: Help Needed for Maintaining
Wayland Bay Circuit Trail. The
Bay Circuit Trail
is a 200 mile trail around Boston that goes through
Wayland. We are looking for a Trail Steward to help
blaze, monitor and maintain the Wayland section of the
trail. If you enjoy walking and exploring trails and can
wield a hammer to nail blazes and a lopper to cut back
brush, this is a great opportunity to help maintain your
town's trail from Lincoln to Sudbury. No trails
experience necessary. We will work with you to get you
started. If interested, email
Denny Nackoney
or call him at 781-237-5174.
12/12/08: Help Breakfast Club support toy
drive. The Cochituate
Father-Son/Father-Daughter Breakfast Club is again
supporting a toy drive to provide toys for needy
children in the Boston area in conjunction with Action
for Boston Community Development (ABCD). The club
has been collecting toys for ABCD for several years.
They are now in a position where they are counted upon
to provide a goodly number of toys for needy children in
the city. Donations of unwrapped toys can be made
at Mel's, Russell's, downstairs at the Wayland Library,
and at Town Building. Collection boxes will be
available at these locations until December 18.
12/12/08: Parmenter Food Pantry Needs
donations. Please consider a food donation to
Parmenter, whose food pantry has seen an increased
demand for food and it is a challenge to keep food on
the shelves. Donations of canned food, pasta, cereal,
soup, etc. are greatly appreciated.
12/12/08: Wayland Charitable Committee needs
donations. Over the last 11 years, the WCC has
distributed approximately $200,000 to Wayland residents.
This has been possible thanks to a fund created by a
generous bequest by former resident Suzanne Leavitt, as
well as private contributions. Payments are made
directly to vendors and provide support for utility
payments, rent, food, clothing, medical bills, and many
other items. Applicants must have lived in Wayland for
at least one year and can call 508-358-3624 for
assistance. Beginning last year with the increase in
fuel costs and compounded now by the economic crisis,
the need in Wayland is growing. The income generated by
the fund is not sufficient to cover the requests for
assistance. This year already, the WCC has provided
$31,000 of assistance to 37 families. Moving forward,
our goal is to raise $30,000 to help cover increased
costs and needs. Please make a tax deductible
contribution to support your neighbors. I have seen
first hand over the years how caring and generous our
community is. Together we can support each other. Every
donation from $5 to $5,000 will make a difference. There
are no administrative costs; all funds directly benefit
our neighbors. Send a tax deductible contribution to the
Wayland Charitable Committee c/o Mike Patterson,
Treasurer/Collector’s Office, Wayland Town Building, 41
Cochituate Road, Wayland MA 01778.
12/12/08: Wayland Public Library Millennium
Endowment Fund. The Library thanks you all of
those who continue to support the Wayland Public Library
Millennium Endowment Fund. If you are planning any
end-of-year giving, please consider contributing to the
Endowment Fund. For more information,

12/6/08: Spread the Bread's 3rd
Annual Gingerbread House Contest. It's the most
wonderful time of the year...so why not set aside some
time and make a magical gingerbread house for Wayland's
community-wide "Holiday Gingerbread House Contest" on
late Sunday afternoon, December 21st, from 4-6pm at
Starbucks in Wayland. Along with some great memories
enjoy prizes to win for yourself and someone special: a
jaw-dropping BIKE, TOY basket, gift certificates for
dinner, Starbucks Gift Baskets and more... We kindly and
respectfully ask that Gingerbread Houses be donated to
charity, St. Francis House in Boston, for those
individuals transitioning out of homelessness for
Christmas this year. Delivery arranged through Spread
the Bread. If you have someone you'd like to donate your
house to, that's great too! It's a fun time to unpack
your imagination and create your version of your
"holiday gingerbread house." Maybe it's a gingerbread
Santa coming down the chimney of your gingerbread
creation or rock candies to make a fireplace or stone
walkway, peppermint sticks and candy canes for porch
posts and round peppermints with a hole in the middle to
create a wreath for the door. The rules are simple:
Everything must be edible and gingerbread house may not
exceed 12 x 12 x 12. All entrants must pre-register at
www.spreadthebread.org by e-mailing your: name,
address, telephone, e-mail and age to
info@spreadthebread.org or filling out a
registration form at Starbucks. Houses can be dropped
off to be judged at 3pm that Sunday afternoon. We will
have a child and adult categories. For contestants we
ask for a suggested donation of $10.00 to help
underwrite this event through Spread the Bread. This
contest is sponsored by Starbucks, Spread the Bread, the
Wayland Town Crier, Liberty Pizza, Sweet Beads,
WaylandeNews.com, the Andrea Fund Make the Dash Count
Youth Board and in partnership with the Boston College
Volunteer and Service Learning Center and the Wayland

Wayland to Waveland is sponsoring a holiday program,
Homes for the Holidays, that allows you to purchase

Holiday Gift Registry. They have identified nine needy

have reached a construction standstill due to lack of
funds and supplies. They have compiled a list of what
they need to complete construction and move in,
including nails, light fixtures, bathroom and kitchen
fixtures and cabinets, and doors. Visit their
Web site
to meet these families, complete the Holiday Gift
Registry form, and mail it with a check to Wayland to

Campaign Runs Through December 19th. For 25
years, the Wayland Public Schools Foundation (WPSF) has
supported teachers by funding classroom innovations and
creative units of study not covered by the regular
school budget. Making a donation to the Wayland Public
Schools Foundation is a perfect way to acknowledge
teachers and administrators and conforms to the
gift-giving policy distributed by Superintendent Gary
Burton. All donations to HATS Off (Honor and
Appreciate Teachers and Staff) are earmarked for
professional development, providing opportunities for
Wayland teachers to stay abreast of educational trends
and new approaches that will inspire great teaching and
learning. Donations also qualify for matching gifts at
participating companies. In an effort to go green,
the WPSF is encouraging everyone to order HATS Off
certificates through our website,
www.WaylandPublicSchoolsFoundation.org. There is a
dedicated HATS Off site at the website. Alternatively,
certificate forms may be printed from the website and
mailed to P.O. Box 97, Wayland, MA 01778, along with a
check made payable to the Wayland Public Schools
Foundation. An acknowledgement certificate will be
sent to the faculty member of your choice along with
your name and personal greeting. The amount donated will
not be disclosed. The deadline for HATS Off

Recycle and GIVE back! Saturday, November 8, 1-4pm.
Safely and CHEAPLY recycle your computers, monitors,
printers, cell phones and more... and 100% of the
proceeds will benefit the "Make the Dash Count
Foundation." This Foundation is run locally by 15 youth
board members from Wayland, Framingham and Needham high
schools, and serves as a living legacy for the beloved
Happy Hollow School teacher, Andrea Chick.
Throughout the year, these student volunteer leaders
learn about philanthropy, review grants and gift $20,000
a year to organizations that help kids at risk of not
fulfilling their dreams. To date, this youth board has
gifted $60,000 locally. This year, due to the
economic downturn, they are charged with the challenge
and opportunity to raise this money. On Saturday,
November 8th from 1pm to 4pm, stop by the Wayland Middle
School and drop off your old computers, monitors and
more. Local recycling centers charge $25 to recycle one
of these items, but through this special fundraiser it's
as little as $15 and it all goes to this charity!!
Thanks to the support of Computer Recycling USA, all
equipment will be disposed of
safely and securely from a data security and
environmental perspective. Certificates available. To
